Terry Hope

ASD

Hope Lake is named in honor of COL Terrill C. Hope, USA, and his family. Terry Hope passed away on May 22, 2025 at the age of 85, leaving behind an enduring legacy of service to his family, his country, and the Scouting community.

A distinguished career Army officer, Colonel Hope served two tours in Vietnam. He concluded his military service as the Commander of the Army’s Foreign Science and Technology Center in Charlottesville, the precursor to today’s National Ground Intelligence Center. His dedication to service extended beyond the military, as he also made significant contributions to Scouting, mentoring generations of youth in the National Capitol Area Council and here in the Virginia Headwaters Council.

In that latter phase of his Scouting career, Terry co-founded and served as Scoutmaster of Troop 111 in Charlottesville. He also held the position of Council President of the Stonewall Jackson Area Council (now Virginia Headwaters Council), a course director for Scouting’s premier adult training program: Wood Badge, and, alongside his family, provided invaluable support to Camp Shenandoah, the council’s 454-acre flagship property.

Terry Hope made an indelible impact on Scouting, and his legacy is fittingly honored with the naming of the lake at Camp Shenandoah as Hope Lake. Each year, hundreds of Scouts achieve their aquatic rank requirements, earn a wide range of aquatic merit badges, and participate in special events such as the mile swim and aquatic competitions—moments that are the hallmark of every summer camp.
